1. Understanding the needs of students – Before starting to prepare teaching materials, identifying the needs of the students is very important. Knowing more about your audience's background and learning outcomes set a path to develop training materials.
2. Capture the audience's attention – People learn about new things for various reasons, whether it's finding new interests, looking for a solution to a complex situation or just improve skills for personal gain and / or professional.
3. Move from the simple to the complex – do not think of how people learn about new things. Novel learning begins when one became interested in the topic. To find out more about this new topic, one generally read up on the basics before moving on to the complexity.
A sound instructional design gradually facilitates learners in complex ideas. It continues to be built on top of the conceptual knowledge base, bringing them forward with enough hands-on practice, and finally to a stage where they can apply the newly acquired knowledge to assess a particular situation and come up with solutions.
